The questions a board should ask about your people transition

Eight questions on the half of the transformation most institutions underestimate. The board asks “what’s our AI strategy?” The town hall asks “will there be a place for me?” Both land on the same desk.

What are our people actually asking about their future here — and have we answered it honestly, with something they can check?
People handle hard truth far better than they handle silence — and they fill silence with stories worse than any truth.
Which roles will change beyond recognition, and which will not survive — and have we said so plainly?
Comfort an institution cannot guarantee does not reassure people. It costs their trust at the moment it is needed most.
Could our people name the reskilling we have promised them — and would they call it real?
A training catalogue is not a path. A path is specific, current, and visibly connected to where the work is going.
What does the institution owe the people whose roles end — and is it written down?
Dignity and real support, handled directly and humanely, not hidden behind process. If it is not written, it is not a commitment.
What are we asking of people in return — and have we earned the right to ask it?
Where an institution is honest and genuinely invests, it earns real participation in remaking the business. Not before.
Are we helping people learn to stand on their own — beyond what our mandate strictly requires?
No institution can promise to save everyone. Letting people stay wholly dependent on one that cannot is its own kind of betrayal.
Who is carrying the weight of this transition alone — and what would sharing the load deliberately look like?
The leaders who try to carry it alone don’t come through whole — and neither do their institutions.
If we get the strategy, the technology, and the capital right but lose our people’s trust — what, exactly, have we built?
A transformation is only as real as the people who carry it.
